What is Flood Insurance?

Flood insurance is designed to help protect your property from financial losses caused by flooding—damage that is typically not covered by standard homeowners or commercial property insurance.

Coverage and pricing are based on several factors, including the property’s location, flood risk, building characteristics, and coverage selected. While flood maps can help identify areas with greater risk, flooding can occur outside designated high-risk flood zones.

Whether you own a home, rental property, or business, Oakdale Insurance Group can help you evaluate your flood risk and find coverage that fits your needs.

More About
Flood Insurance

Flooding can happen almost anywhere, and standard homeowners insurance generally does not cover flood damage. A separate flood insurance policy can help protect your home and belongings from covered losses caused by rising water and other qualifying flood events.

Under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a flood generally involves temporary inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land or two or more properties, including the insured property. Covered causes can include overflow of inland or tidal waters, unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface water, and certain mudflows.

It’s also important to understand that mudflow and landslide are not the same thing. Certain mudflows may meet the NFIP definition of a flood, while landslides, slope failures, and other earth movements generally do not.

Because flood risk and coverage needs vary by property, having the right policy can make an important difference when the unexpected happens.
